04/2015 - More support for Open Source in response to increasing mass surveillance
The European Parliament (EP) recommends to increasingly support initiatives developing Open Source safety- and data protection software. Aiming to improve technical independency as well as to protect the European information society from mass surveillance, the European Union's (EU) initiatives are supposed to continue with the simplification of encryption software. In addition to that, the increased usage of Open Source applications and operating systems may reduce the risk of mass surveillance caused by data protection breaches [source: heise.de].
